Driving from Fez, we pass through the Middle Atlas Mountains and through world-famous cedar forests. Cedar has been used since Phoenician and Roman times for wood crafts, timber, and construction, even for ancient naval vessels. We pass through Ifrane, a Swiss-style Moroccan town, and Azrou, a typical Berber village of the Zayan Middle Atlas. We will cross the Ziz Valley and the Ziz Gorge towards the eastern Saharan city of Erfoud. From Erfoud, we will take a rocky desert trail to Merzouga. A camel ride at sunset and a night in a Berber tent in the heart of the dunes. Dinner and overnight at the luxury camp.
Wake up early in the morning to admire the sunrise from the top of the dunes. You will have time in the camp for breakfast, a shower, and sandboarding if you wish. Then we will return to the hotel with the camels, and you will meet the driver for the remainder of the tour. We will make a stop in the village of Khamlia, home to Black people, to discover Gnawa music. Next, we will visit a nomadic family to see how they live in the desert and taste Berber pizza with them, prepared with 44 spices, before leaving the desert. We will pass through the town of Rissani and Tafilalet, the center of the Alaouite dynasty, towards the impressive Todra Gorge, with views of the valley from the hillside. We will pass through the large village of Dades and spend the night in a hotel.
We’ll head to Ouarzazate, where we’ll visit the UNESCO-protected Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. We’ll have lunch there and then visit the Atlas Film Studios. We’ll then cross the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi ‘n Tichka Pass, stopping for photos along the way, and finally arrive in Marrakech. We’ll drive you to your riad in Marrakech.
